The Mystery of the Disappearing Honeybees

Ecology Case Study Web Quest

The Case of the Disappearing Honeybees

Introduction:

The following case study is a genuine problem that scientists are currently investigating. You will have access to articles, video clips, podcasts and data in order to solve the mystery of the change in honey bee populations. Throughout the case study, you will be asked to submit assignments.

Procedure:

Part A: Hypothesis Generation

1. Listen to the Searching for What's Behind the Bee Decline --podcast to get an introduction to the case study. Be prepared to share your thoughts and reactions in class.

Info about the podcast---

-Log in username "friends" and password "friends".

3. One half of your group should read more about honey bees at PBS Honey Bee Special. Click on each image on the left side of the screen to learn about the colony, queen, worker, drone, communication, nest, comb, food, temperature and defense. Take notes. The other half should read about honey bees at Great Plains Nature Center-Honeybees. Take notes. Share notes with your group members.

4. Watch the video below entitled Life Cycle of Honey Bees and take notes.

5. Based on your prior knowledge and what you learned from the articles and the video in Part A, complete Honey Bee Webquest Part One Assignment and submit your answer to moodle.

Part B: Hypothesis Testing

1. Each person in your group should watch one the videos below and take notes that answer the questions below. Make sure each person watches a different video.

  • What is the problem?
  • Why it is important to solve this problem?
  • What are some possible causes of the problem?
