Indentifying Unknown Specimen Case Study Paper

Background: For the last few weeks, you have investigated either specimen A or specimen B. You also learned about the five kingdoms of life: Plants, Animals, Fungi, Monerans and Protists. You will write a paper identifying the unknown specimen (A or B) as a member of one of the kingdoms of life.

 

Format:

•    1-2 pages of text, 5 paragraphs

•    Single-spaced

•    12pt Times New Roman font

•    Normal margins

•    Include visuals (diagrams, pictures, graphs) – not included in the 1-2 page requirement. Same rules as lab reports (captions, titles). Feel free to draw pictures and copy and paste diagrams from packet. If you wish to copy and paste diagrams, the packet is available on moodle.

•    Include acknowledgements

 

Components: Each component should be clearly labeled (same rules as lab reports.)

•    Descriptive title: same rules as lab reports

•    Introduction: One paragraph (2-3 sentences) explaining the problem.

Paragraph one

  1. Mentions your unknown specimen by name: “Specimen A” or “Specimen B.”
  2. States where you found it
  3. States your desire to identify it.

 

 

•    Identification: Two paragraphs plus visuals.

 Paragraph one

  1. Identifies your specimen as one of the kingdoms of life.
  2. Discusses the evidence (and visuals) that support your identification.
  3. Immediately following this paragraph, you should include visuals that are relevant to the evidence presented. For example, if your specimen performs photosynthesis like plants, then you should include the graph from the photosynthesis experiment. Only include a particular visual once. If a visual is relevant to other paragraphs, then include a sentence in the latter paragraphs about the visual.

 

Paragraph two

  1. Discusses the evidence that does not support (goes against) identifying your specimen as the other kingdoms of life.
  2. Discusses all of the other kingdoms.
  3. Immediately following this paragraph, include relevant visuals or refer to an earlier visual. (See instructions for visuals in paragraph one of the identification section.)

 

•    Conclusion: Two paragraphs plus visuals.

 Paragraph one

  1. Discusses contradictory or misleading evidence
  2. Are there characteristics that your specimen shares with more than one kingdom? (For example, assuming your specimen does photosynthesis, three kingdoms can also perform photosynthesis.)
  3. Immediately following this paragraph, include relevant visuals or refer to an earlier visual. (See instructions for visuals in paragraph one of the identification section.)

 

Paragraph two

  1. Discusses unanswered questions (same as lab reports)
  2. Discusses potential follow up experiments and unknown/undiscovered facts, which would have been helpful in your identification. (same as lab reports)

Proper Identification: Consider the following when deciding on the identification of your specimen and making your argument.

•    Cell structure

•    Results of the photosynthesis experiment

•    Unknown Specimen Identification Key

•    Visuals to include and consider:

o    Drawings and/or diagrams of plant, animal and specimen cells

o    Graph of photosynthesis experiment

 

 

Grading: The paper will be graded on the

•    Logic of your argument: Based on the evidence you used, does your argument make sense?

•    Usage & explanation of evidence: Did you use all of the relevant information from the unit? Did you thoroughly explain your evidence? Did you define key terms? Did you explain how your evidence supports your identification or why it is misleading?

•    Format: Did you follow the directions on this handout and explained in class?
