Tuning Protocol for Experiments

Presenter group = members who share their work. Participants = members who behave as audience members and provide feedback to the presenter group. Times below assume ½ period for each group. Presenter group #1 will present in first protocol and then become participants in the second protocol, while presenter group #2 will do the opposite.

Essential Questions: Did the experiment test the hypothesis in an effective way? Is this a controlled experiment? Should we trust the procedure and the data collected from the procedure?

Agenda

I. Introduction [2 minutes]. Mr. Wilson briefly reviews the protocol goals, rules, and agenda. –1st protocol only

II. Presentation [5 minutes]. Presenter group describes the experiment and presents any handouts and/or pictures for review. The hypothesis and procedure should be emphasized, including specifically how the independent variable was manipulated and how the dependent variable was measured.

III. Clarifying Questions [1 minute maximum]. Mr. Wilson judges if questions more properly belong as warm feedback or cool feedback than as clarifying questions.

IV. Pause to reflect on warm feedback and cool feedback [1 minute maximum]. Participants make note of warm feedback (supportive comments) and cool feedback (more critical comments.)

V. Warm feedback and Cool Feedback [7 minutes]. Participants among themselves share responses to the work; presenter group is silent but should take brief notes. Begin with warm feedback.

VI. Reflection/ Response [3 minutes]. Presenter group reflects on and responds to those comments or questions he or she chooses to. Participants are silent. Mr. Wilson may clarify or lend focus.

VII. Debrief [5 minutes]. How did the tuning protocol experience compare with what you expected?", the entire class discusses any frustrations, misunderstandings, or positive reactions participants have experienced. More general discussion of the tuning protocol may develop. ---2nd protocol only

Rules for Participants

1. Be respectful of presenter groups. By making their work more public, presenter groups are exposing themselves to kinds of critiques they may not be used to. Inappropriate comments or questions should be withdrawn.

2. It is expected that you will provide critical feedback. Without thoughtful but probing "cool" questions and comments, presenter groups won't benefit from the tuning protocol experience.

3. Be appreciative of the Mr. Wilson's role, particularly in regard to following the rules and keeping time. A tuning protocol that doesn't allow for all components (presentation, feedback, response, debrief) to be enacted properly will do a disservice both to the presenter groups and to the participants.
